Contraception Counselling

Contraception, also known as birth control, is the prevention of pregnancy by interfering with conception or implantation. Independent GPs can provide counselling and discuss options based on your personal needs. Methods include:

  • Abstinence – 100% effective and prevents STIs
  • Natural family planning – Based on fertility awareness
  • Barrier methods – Condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, and spermicides
  • Hormonal methods – Pills, implants, patches, injections, vaginal rings, and IUDs
  • Withdrawal – Involves removing the penis before ejaculation
  • Sterilisation – Permanent options like vasectomy or tubal ligation

Discuss your medical history, family plans, and lifestyle with your GP to determine the most suitable option.

Note: Most contraception methods prevent pregnancy but do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
