Hepatitis B Vaccination at Birth – Information for Parents

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) recommends that all newborn babies receive a hepatitis B vaccine at birth, followed by routine doses at 2, 4 and 6 months of age.

This recommendation applies regardless of the mother’s hepatitis B status.

Why is the birth dose recommended?

Although hepatitis B screening is offered during pregnancy, there are situations where:

  • screening may not occur,
  • results may be delayed, or
  • infection may occur after testing.

Babies who acquire hepatitis B at birth have a much higher risk of developing chronic infection, which can lead to serious liver disease later in life.

The birth dose provides early protection during this vulnerable period.

Is the hepatitis B vaccine safe?

Yes. The hepatitis B vaccine has been used safely in Australia and worldwide for many years.

ATAGI has reaffirmed that the vaccine given at birth is safe and highly effective.

Recommended vaccine schedule

  • At birth
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • Additional dose at 12 months for pre-term or low-birth-weight babies

Cost

Under the National Immunisation Program, the hepatitis B vaccine is free for newborns.

ATAGI recommendations for hepatitis B vaccination in newborns

ATAGI continues to recommend the hepatitis B birth dose for all newborns, regardless of maternal hepatitis B status. Screening during pregnancy may not always occur, results can be delayed, or infection may happen after testing.

The birth dose plays a key role in preventing chronic hepatitis B and its long-term complications. Healthcare providers are encouraged to promote birth dose vaccination and use SKAI resources to support informed conversations with families.
